Renault 5 Diamant, an electric show car to celebrate the model's 50th anniversary

Renault announces a new collaboration with French designer Pierre Gonalons to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Renault 5. Result of discussions between Pierre Gonalons and the team specializing in colors and materials from the Renault Design Department it is the Renault 5 Diamant show car. An electric car that shows the designer’s vision of the car of the future, merging the codes of the car with those of interior design.

“Renault’s invitation to reinvent the mythical Renault 5 on the occasion of its fiftieth anniversary is an honor for me. The brand gave me carte blanche to design the car of my dreams,” he says. Pierre Gonalons, “For me, Renault 5 embodies a pop, optimistic and resolutely contemporary lifestyle. With Renault 5 Diamant, I wanted to pay tribute to its revolutionary design and transfer my universe of shapes and colors to the world of automobiles. .”

Pierre Gonalons was inspired in the decorative arts and more particularly in fine jewelry, which translates into precious and innovative details. Renault 5 Diamant retains the characteristic lines and iconic shape of the original model that rolled off the Renault production line in 1972. However, beneath this familiar silhouette, a profound transformation has taken place. Under the hood, the car is equipped with a 100% electric motor, the first element that indicates its modernity. Visually, its design introduces high quality details that invite you to discover this new and refined mix.

Outside, the bodywork has been streamlined to better highlight the emblematic lines of the Renault 5 and the familiar components have been deliberately diverted from their environment and enhanced both in form and in finish. The headlights and lights are designed like precious stones and the wide wheels, inherited from the Alpine version, have been smoothed and bear Pierre Gonalons’ famous sun in their center. The exterior color is a three-coat paint, consisting of gold pigments on a pink base. It is covered with a glossy varnish which provides a very changing effect with golden reflections in the sun, and a more bluish tone in the shade.

Thanks to the joint experience of the Renault design team and the craftsmen involved in the project, Pierre Gonalons was able to simplify the car by keeping only the most essential elements. The door handles and window lifters, as well as the gear lever, are made from a raw dial, treated with very Parisian references in pale gold brass, stainless steel and very resistant materials. The steering wheel, with a very particular but functional shape, is in marble on carbon, and even the vehicle key receives a specific treatment. All of this with Renault’s experience to give the whole thing flawless automotive credibility and realism, without compromising on the use of functional elements.

Renault 5 Diamant is also about technology. First of all, it is 100% electric and incorporates a fingerprint reader to unlock the doors. As an electric vehicle, Renault 5 Diamant has a three-position gear lever (forward, neutral and reverse). Three round digital counters celebrate the world of watchmaking and display essential information: speed, load and time. The driver’s cell phone provides everything needed in terms of navigation and infotainment and is specifically located in a slot in the center of the dashboard.

After gathering communities of enthusiasts on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter and YouTube, and recently launching its official pages on TikTok and Pinterest, Renault has decided to enter the NFT universe. As part of this project, Renault and Pierre Gonalons will also develop a collection of numerous NFTs inspired by the Renault 5 Diamant which will be presented in September.

Also, the Renault 5 Diamant will be auctioned a few weeks later with “its digital twin” NFT. After the auction, the profits will be donated to Give Me 5, the Renault brand’s new social responsibility project dedicated to new generations through sport and music.
