Ukraine halts enemy advance in Donetsk despite push by Russian forces

A week after the capture of the Ukrainian city of Lisichansk by Russian forces, which claim control of the Lugansk region, the Ukrainian resistance was able to contain the enemy, whose offensive in the Donetsk region ran out of steam.

“The enemy is gathering troops near Belohorivka, shelling the surrounding settlements, carrying out air strikes” in Donetsk, Serghiy Gaidai, the governor of Lugansk, wrote on Telegram.

According to the head of the Ukrainian region, in which, he says, Ukraine still has “grey areas” despite the fact that Russia considers it taken, the enemy “has not yet been able to occupy all of Lugansk”.

A week of small progress

Less than a week after Russian forces announced control of Lisichansk, Lugansk’s last town, their advance in the neighboring region was not considerable, although they punished the Ukrainian forces along the entire length of the front, without allowing them a counter-offensive.

The governor of Luhansk noted that “on the last night alone the Russians launched seven artillery bombardments and four missile attacks” in their effort to advance towards Siversk, midway on their way to Sloviansk and Kramatorsk, the main Ukrainian strongholds in Donetsk. .

The US Institute for War Studies (ISW) confirmed this by noting that “Russian forces continued to attack settlements west of Lisichansk with the aim of advancing towards Siversk.”

The ISW observed Russian offensive attempts towards Verjnokamianske, 8 kilometers east of the city, while the Ukrainian General Staff reported an assault on Grigorivka, 11 kilometers northwest of the city .

For his part, the ambassador of the self-proclaimed People’s Republic of Lugansk, Rodión Miroshnik, assured in his Telegram account that “Grigorivka has been taken”, while the pro-Russian forces “continue to fight to free Serebrianka”.

“The offensive advances from the north towards Siversk”he pointed.

According to the pro-Russian, the Ukrainian army is trying to create fortifications on the outskirts of Siversk but “it is already clear to everyone that they will not be able to contain the advance of Russian forces for a long time, so some units sneak outside of the city”.

Meanwhile, Russian forces are already preparing the ground for their future advance, the ISW found, given the likelihood that the Russian military will “prepare the conditions to resume offensive operations (…) through air attacks on Bohorodichne and the shelling of Dibrovne, Adamivka and Sloviansk”.

Attacks in Donetsk

Kharkiv Governor Oleg Sinegubov noted on his Telegram account that Russian forces shelled the Izium district of the Donetsk region, an attack consisting of the Fire Information System for Resource Management (FIRMS) from NASA, which detected fires in fields northwest of Sloviansk.

In the town of Chasiv Yar, west of Kramatorsk, a Russian Uragán missile hit a residential building, Donetsk region governor Pavló Kirylenko reported on Telegram. an attack that claimed the lives of at least 15 civilians.

Rescue services, which have already rescued five people trapped in the ruins, say around 24 people still remain under the rubble.

Russian Defense Ministry sources told Russian news agency TASS that the building was occupied by the Ukrainian military and therefore became a target of the Russian military.

“According to the information we received from there, from under the rubble, they are just removing the bodies of Ukrainian servicemen. There were no civilians there,” the defense representative said.

Fighting in eastern and southern Ukraine

Sinegubov welcomed the failure of the Russians to advance in Kharkov in recent weeks, saying that “Our fighters are defending positions in all directions.”

“The Russians are trying to prevent the advance of Ukrainian forces and secure their positions. The occupiers carried out a reconnaissance mission in the town of Dolina, but withdrew after failing.”

A situation similar to that in southern Ukraine, where Russian forces carried out “unsuccessful reconnaissance attempts in the Kherson region and its border with the Dnipro region”, according to the ISW.

For its part, the Ukrainian command said that the Russian army focused on defending occupied positions and stopping Ukrainian counterattacks with “the means available”.

Ukrainian President Volodímir Zelenski acknowledged the situation, confirming the attacks on Mykokáiv, Kharkov, Kryvyi Rih and towns in Zaporizhia.

“He attacked the housing sector, absolutely deliberately, on purpose, houses, civilian targets, people. There are casualties, dead, injured. The brutal Russian artillery attacks in the Donbass do not don’t stop for a day,” he said in a video message. .

More weapons for Ukraine

According to Zelensky, it is only possible “stop this type of terrorist actions with modern and powerful weapons”referring to Western arms supplies.

“I want to thank the United States for the decision to provide Ukraine with a new $400 million aid package,” he added. he pointed.

In particular, he asserted that “additional HIMARS systems and other precision weapons allow us to take counter-terrorism measures, to reduce Russian missile attacks against our civilians”.

“Do we want a turn in the war? The more tools we have for this, the faster we push the Russians aside,” Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podoliak wrote on Twitter.

The representative of the Ukrainian Presidency asked the West for more “HIMARS, to destroy enemy bases and logistics in the rear with high precision, heavy artillery, to respond quantity by quantity, and armor, such as “assault fists”.
